Cottage isn’t just a decorating style — it’s an attitude. Cozy, happy and unpretentious, it harks back to simpler times and evokes a sense of easy, carefree living. And since the kitchen is usually among the busiest spots in the house, it makes sense to translate that mindset to your cabinetry, fixtures, appliances and more. If you’re planning a kitchen facelift or remodel, consider these ways to infuse your kitchen with cottage comfort.
Inset. Although this style tends to be one of the most expensive on the market, it’s a classic look that’ll last for generations. The inset door gets its name because it is set inside of the cabinet frame — typical cabinet doors rest on the outside of the frame. The door is designed and constructed with extremely precise measurements so that it nests inside the frame and opens and closes properly, even when the wood expands and contracts.
You don’t have to be obsessively neat and organized for open shelving to look attractive, but you’ll want to make an effort not to let clutter build. Keeping dishware to a single color, as shown here, creates a striking effect.
Want your backsplash to send a message? How about a stenciled design? That should do the trick. First apply spackle on the wall and let it dry overnight. Then paint the wall any color you want (in this case a dark chocolate tone). Then sponge on bronze metallic paint. Then comes the tricky part: the stenciling. You need to do some research and pick a technique. Also, be patient.
